Letter from the ALAS de NM Interim Board of Directors

posted Oct 9, 2012, 4:44 PM by ALAS deNuevoMéxico
Dear ALAS de Nuevo México Members:
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for allowing us to serve as your interim board of directors for the 2012-2013 school year. Latinos represent the fastest growing population in all school districts and universities in the state of New Mexico, yet they are among some of the lowest academically performing, making it essential now more than ever that we work to support efforts that best prepare students to succeed at the highest levels.

We believe the development of strong leaders in New Mexico is crucial to support educators who will help set the pathways to improve student academic success, which will lead to greater graduation rates and continuing education opportunities and a strong economic base for the state of New Mexico.

As part of our commitment to include all who are interested in being involved, we need to actively support statewide participation by increasing membership and providing mentoring, training and most importantly strong support for those taking on leadership roles in education from the smallest rural community to the largest cities.

As part of this effort, we will be holding informational and recruitment meetings throughout the state. Look for us in Santa Fe on Nov. 7-10 as we take part in La Coscecha Conference.  Let us know of any conferences or special occasions being held in your part of the state that we might have a presence at these gatherings as well.

Our interim board will hold its monthly meetings on the second Friday of the month in Albuquerque. If you have any agenda items for these meetings, please send them to us by the first Friday of the month. You can send them to alasdenm@gmail.com

This is an exciting time for us as educational leaders to support one another and create greatness for our students and their communities.

Many thanks go to Eduardo Soto and Albuquerque Public Schools for getting this statewide endeavor off the ground.

Sincerely,
Mario Zuniga Co-President ALAS NM

Anthony S. Griego Co-President ALAS NM

James Lujan, Vice President

Jacqueline Costales, Secretary

Ray Trejo, Treasurer

Johanna King, Publicist/Historian

Chris Sanchez, Member at Large
